Είναι το χαμόγελο της Μόνα Λίζα η παράσταση μιας γυναίκας που χαμογελά ειρωνικά, ή η ειρωνική απεικόνιση μιας γυναίκας που χαμογελά ανόητα, χωρίς συναίσθηση των πραγμάτων;
Απλοϊκότητα ή ανόητη ικανοποίηση; Σκόπιμος εμπαιγμός ή ασυναίσθητη ειρωνεία; Τι γνωρίζει ο πλέον σοφός των ανθρώπων Σωκράτης που ουδέν λέγει ότι γνωρίζει;
Is Mona Liza the figure of a woman that smiles ironically, or is she, rather, the ironic representation of a woman smiling pathetically, with no awareness of the situation? Naivety or simplistic satisfaction? Purposeful scoff, or unintended irony? What does the wisest of men, Socrates, know, when proclaiming that he knows nothing at all?
When mockery assumes the form of the mimesis of the very defects of the person scorned. Or, again, of the person pretending to ridicule. An essential mark of irony is the distance or gap or inconsequence between phenomenon and reality, either on the side of the victim that feels certain that things are as she thinks they are, while in ignorance of how different in reality they are, or, on the side of the perpetrator, the ironist who says one thing while meaning something totally different, opposite or even apposite. Strategy of deceit, technique of travesty of words as meanings, condemnation of meanings to mean no longer what they meant, abuse of language and signification, ironic reversal of all said abuses, irony ironing out its own traces.
But, then, we find ourselves in the domain of politics. Target victim, 'butt of the joke', is the citizen, on whose ignorant bliss the very game of politics, a game of wisdom and frolicness, call it 'cat and mouse', is grounded. Either the ironist politician projects a phenomenon as 'real' while pretending he ignores the reality of its falsehood, e.g. when he speaks of 'development' and 'growth' in the economy, when he should darn know that it is the very 'legislation for growth' that undermines it and renders it impossible. Or, the victim (us and thou, dear reader) is deceived by the phenomenon while ignoring the reality, the platitude, as it were, of the political lie: that the 'legislation for growth' is proclaimed and dutifully, in our obedient media, is advertised as such, while intended merely as a phenomenon, a smokescreen to hide the fact that they are meant precisely as such, to hide the reality that neither will they bring the slightest spurn to growth nor are they meant as such by the politicians.
In the gap between phenomenon and reality, fabricators of the tromp d' oeil and manufacturers of meanings, longshoremen of conceit and convey belts of political irony, ironists of ironists: the journalists. Legion, after all in this country, are the journos who, while ostensively in the business of 'speaking truth to power' are rewarded by the men in power with prestigious employment. Deemed 'good' now, for being good whence and... how? Let some distinguished journalists vent wrath and fury against us (they already have) for perceiving and dressing it down as a most offensive irony this shameless reversal of roles. When, that is, the criticism of politics turns into or, worse, proves to have been, from the outset, a politics of criticism. In fact, the 'act' of criticism taking the upper hand from the critique of the act, the act of politics.
And, oh the irony of ironies, all for the clapping and handsomely paying hand of politics.

Politics and Irony, or: Mona Liza's Smile
In the gap between phenomenon and reality, fabricators of the tromp d' oeil and manufacturers of meanings, longshoremen of conceit and convey belts of political irony, ironists of ironists: the journalists.
